Govt Degree College, Rayachoty was established in the year 1978 with the untiring efforts of philanthropists, elders and politicians of this area.

Kadapa district has got a unique place in the annals of Telugu as this is blessed with several celebrities in Telugu literature like Praja kavi Vemana, Bhattu Murthy, Ayyala Raju Rama Bhadrudu, and a great devotee of Lard venkateswara, Thalapala Annamaiah. The services rendered by C.P.Brown an ICS officer of this District towards Telugu language and literature lives long as long as the sun shines.

The Department of Telugu started since the inception of the college i.e. in 1978. During last 40 years eminent personalities like Sri.H.Narayana Murthy, Sri.Y.Obul Reddy, Dr.B.Venkata Subbaiah and Dr.T.Jayarami Reddy worked in this department.

The department conducts many cultural & literary events and competitions on various occasions like Telugu Basha Dinotsavam. Students are trained by the department to take part in cultural and literary activities conducted in the college and also by other colleges and social organisations.
